The music cover I designed for the Warsaw-based rapper, known as Pękaty, for the project titled #404, is a deliberate nod to the concept of error. In the graphic design, I wanted to strongly reference the symbolism of errors, glitches, and the rawness conveyed in the artist’s music, which tackles topics such as international politics, conspiracy theories, and various social issues. To visually translate the artist’s musical project, I took a step back in time, approximately 20 years ago, and drew inspiration from the aesthetics and graphics of Windows 95, which were familiar to everyone at the time. The front cover features an old cathode ray tube monitor smashed with a hammer, with a glitched album title overlaying it. The titles seem indecipherable at first glance, but to read them, one must wear the included 3D glasses. These glasses are crucial to the project, as they allow for the proper viewing of the cover and double-sided poster. Looking through the red lens reveals completely different content than through the blue lens. The overarching theme is the layout of the Windows 95 desktop, with icons, open windows of various applications, and a recurring pop-up displaying a critical system error.
